TM Global puts new international internet gateways in Sabah and Sarawak

Telekom Malayia’s wholesale domestic and international business arm TM Global says it has deployed two additional international internet gateways (IGWs) in Sabah and Sarawak to boost connectivity in East Malaysia.

TM Global says the IGWs will serve as crucial hubs for international Internet traffic exchange, enabling TM’s customers in East Malaysia and the neighbouring region to access global internet traffic via the most efficient route.

IGWs in Sabah and Sarawak reduce the need to route traffic back to West Malaysia, which TM Global says significantly enhances connectivity speed and reliability for businesses, service providers and their end-customers.

The two IGWs, located in Penampang (Sabah) and Stampin (Sarawak), will strengthen TM Global’s existing internet exchange (IX) nodes in Sabah and Sarawak. Currently, TM Global’s Sabah IX nodes are operating in Kota Kinabalu, Inanam, Elopura, Menggatal and Putatan. Its Sarawak nodes are in Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, Petra Jaya, Kuala Baram and Tabuan Jaya.

TM Global EVP Khairul Liza Ibrahim said the new IGWs would also help bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak by enhancing Internet coverage for communities in smaller towns and remote locations.

“This will help drive digital opportunities for education, job prospects and entrepreneurship that will uplift these communities into the digital economy,” she said in a statement.
