América Móvil plans to invest US$597 million in Ecuador over the next three years through its Claro unit, as it looks to strengthen coverage and services amid growing competition from Millicom’s recent entry into the market.
The announcement was made by CEO Daniel Hajj during a meeting with Ecuadorian president Daniel Noboa and telecoms minister Roberto Kury.
The investment follows América Móvil’s US$597 million payment to renew its spectrum licence through to 2038, which also secured additional spectrum to support its 5G rollout.
Claro has already launched 5G services in four locations – Guayaquil, Quito, Puerto Ayora and Coca. By the end of 2025, the operator had deployed 99 5G antennas in the 3.3GHz band, according to the country’s telecoms regulator.
BNamericas reports that América Móvil operates around 11,800 base stations in Ecuador, maintaining its position as the country’s largest mobile network operator, ahead of Movistar – now owned by Millicom – and state-backed CNT.
