After the Ethiopian government declared its intention of allowing domestic and foreign investment in the state-run operator Ethio Telecom, both Vodacom and MTN have indicated their interest in the market.
MTN noted that Ethiopia “presents many exciting telecommunication opportunities”, and described the East African market as a “natural fit” for its African portfolio. Similarly, Vodacom deemed Ethiopia “an attractive market, so it follows that there would be interest”.
However, in the same statement, Vodacom acknowledged that the Ethiopian government’s actions would require detailed scrutiny before the company could commit to an investment.
MTN and Vodacom are both based in South Africa, and provide services in several markets across Africa.
