2013 Trends: Debasis Chatterji, CEO, Netxcell Limited

India's telecom sector faced a particularly turbulent year, but 2013 may well turn around a lot of the negativity that affected the country's market last year.

Year 2012 for Telecom Industry

This year, the telecom industry - which has been the poster boy for growth for quite some time - has not had a very encouraging year, as the growth story has almost ended. Subscriber growth has practically come to a halt. This is due to several factors:

1. Saturation of pre-paid subscriber base in metros, tier 1, tier 2 cities and semi urban areas has reduced the growth in numbers

2. Extreme competition over tariffs is hurting the bottom line of operators and therefore many of them are consolidating their operations

3. A general negative publicity about telecom due to scandals followed by cancellation of telecom licenses by Honorable Supreme Court of India has created a negative sentiment amongst the masses. Moreover the Telecom VAS (Value Added Services) Sector has also been affected due to strict regulatory practice prescribed by TRAI

Expectations from the year 2013

In the coming year we are expecting that a lot of clarity on key policies and decisions will come, especially for the telecom sector 2013 has a ray of hope in terms of decisions being taken at the central level and we expect the sentiment towards telecom sector to become positive.

Suggestions for improvement of Telecom sector

The telecom industry is a very dynamic one and hence we need to brace ourselves for challenges every day. We need to keep innovating and learn the tricks of trade, applying our experiences and skills as and when required.

Infrastructure of Hyderabad

With prestigious national level events such as COP-11 being held in the city, the infrastructure has improved a lot. Progress in Metro cities is a healthy sign for the growth in the coming year. The infrastructure at certain areas of the city as drastically developed. Having said that, we should also realize that there is always scope for improvement in other parts of the city.
