DIGI Hungary petitions against 5G auction exclusion

Romanian-owned operator Digi Hungary collected 80,000 petitions against its exclusion from Hungary’s next 5G auction.

Romanian-owned operator DIGI Hungary collected 80,000 petitions against its exclusion from Hungary’s next 5G auction.

Telecompaper reported the petition was launched at the end of September to pressure the country’s telecoms regulator Nemzeti Media- es Hirkozlesi Hatosag (NMHH), which is conducting the auction.

NMHH rejected DIGI’s application for a licence in September 2019 for failing to meet its legibility criteria. Rivals Magyar Telekom, Telenor Hungary and Vodafone Hungary were awarded 15-year licenses for spectrum in the 700MHz and 3,600MHz bands in March, despite DIGI launching legal action to suspend the awarding process.

The regulator will award licenses in the 900MHz and 1,800MHz bands in 2021, but Digi Hungary said preliminary proposals had several conditions that are obstacles to the operator participating.
