Ericsson expands India R&D footprint with new 5G software unit

Ericsson has strengthened its R&D presence in India with the launch of a new Radio Access Network (RAN) Software Research & Development unit in Bengaluru, focused on advancing 5G and 5G Advanced technologies.

The new unit will develop software features for Ericsson’s 5G baseband platform in collaboration with its global RAN software teams. The investment expands Ericsson’s Indian R&D footprint, which already includes major operations in Chennai and Gurugram, and builds on the company’s growing focus on 6G and AI innovation.

Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions for South East Asia, Oceania and India, said the move “represents a significant step forward towards strengthening our R&D operations in India,” adding that Ericsson aims to “leverage Indian software talent while contributing to building the local telecom ecosystem.”

David Bjore, Head of RAN Software & Compute Platforms at Ericsson, said the new centre underscores India’s importance to the company’s global technology roadmap. “For the first time, we’re developing RAN software in India. This not only supports India’s rising tech scene but enables us to create solutions here that can have a global impact,” he said.

The Bengaluru launch follows Ericsson’s June 2025 announcement to expand its ASIC development activities in India to strengthen the country’s semiconductor ecosystem. The vendor has also deepened collaboration with local partners, including projects with Volvo and Airtel on extended reality (XR) and digital twin applications, and with IIT Madras on responsible AI frameworks for 6G networks.
