The GSMA has launched its Mobile Connect service in India through six of the country’s operators.
Over 800 million customers of Aircel, Bharti Airtel, Idea, Tata Teleservices, Telenor and Vodafone India will be able to access Mobile Connect. The service allows customers to build and manage a complete digital identity through a single account, meaning that they no longer need to remember multiple passwords.
At the launch event, Mats Granryd, director general of the GSMA, said: “Today’s launch marks the culmination of a year-long collaboration amongst the Indian MNOs to deliver a single, intuitive and secure mobile-based authentication solution that enables hundreds of millions of consumers to safely and seamlessly access online services on their mobile devices without worrying about privacy or passwords.”
Mobile Connect was first introduced at Mobile World Congress in 2014, and is now available in 22 countries via 42 operators. This means that almost 3 billion consumers can access the service. This number has increased from 2 billion since February this year.
The service uses the unique mobile number of a device as a means of identifying a user and providing secure access to online services. A unique PIN is also used in instances that require enhanced security. Mobile Connect is used by service providers across a range of sectors including banking, commerce, entertainment, health, hospitality, media and travel. B2B Mobile Connect services are also being used to prevent fraud.
