Iraq to build first data centres with Nokia to boost digital sovereignty

The Iraqi government has announced plans to construct the country’s first data centres in partnership with Nokia.

In a translated statement, Iraq’s Ministry of Communications said it had signed a contract with the vendor in Baghdad to build two facilities at the Al-Rasheed exchange and the Al-Intisar exchange. The deal was signed between the state-owned operator General Company for Communications and Information Technology and Nokia.

Minister of Communications, Dr Hiyam Al-Yasiri, attended the signing, describing it as the first step towards Iraq maintaining its digital sovereignty. The new centres will ensure that data generated by Iraqis is kept within the country rather than being routed through exchanges overseas.

Governments worldwide are taking similar steps to safeguard data and protect digital infrastructure and technologies from malicious actors.
