Orange Romania announces renewable power deal with Engie

Operator Orange Romania has signed a ten-year virtual power purchase agreement (vPPA) with Engie Romania, a division of French low-carbon energy and services group Engie, to procure around 40 GWh of wind energy per year from one of Engie Romania’s wind farms.

This is the second vPPA between the two companies. A six-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) was signed in 2023 that covered 30 GWh of Orange Romania’s electricity consumption with solar power.

According to the Renewables Now website, Orange Romania is committed to a net carbon zero target by 2040. This agreement contributes to that goal by ensuring a substantial portion of its energy needs are met with renewable sources.

In 2024, Orange Romania, one of the country's largest operators, with more than 11 million local customers, says it achieved its target of 93% of its energy consumption coming from renewable sources.

Engie Romania, a power producer and distributor, operates 211 MW of renewables in Romania, distributed between three wind farms totalling 178 MW and five solar plants with a combined installed capacity of 33 MW. The company aims to reach 1 GW of installed renewables capacity in the country by 2030.

In 2024, parent company Engie says it won 4.3 GW of PPA deals, up from 2.7 GW in 2023, equivalent to 136 TWh of electricity supply. These 85 agreements cover North America, South America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

It says the PPA market has been driven in recent years by the growing need for decarbonised electricity in all sectors, particularly in the technology and digital sectors where new energy-intensive uses such as AI have emerged.
