Orange and French energy firm ENGIE have formed a partnership focused on delivering electricity to rural Africa.
The operator will also seek to use the alliance to optimise the supply of electricity to its telecom infrastructure in Africa and the Middle East, where it is present in 19 markets. ENGIE will use its expertise to help Orange power its telecom towers more efficiently.
Stating that it is “keen to take part in such a major challenge to expand the electricity grid in Africa”, Orange has added that it its partnership with ENGIE will see the firms exploring new ways of providing power to rural homes, such as solar kits and local electricity networks. Associated bills could then be paid via Orange Money.
The partners noted that “an estimated 69% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa and 90% of the rural population in the same region have no access to the electricity grid”, adding that they wish to introduce “stable and secure power supply program[s], reduce [their] energy footprint and contain costs despite rapidly growing energy requirements”.
