Safaricom’s M-Pesa Ethiopia announced on Monday it has launched a new mobile money platform on Monday called M-Pesa LeHulum that works with any SIM card, effectively opening M-Pesa up to anyone regardless of what mobile network they use.
In a LinkedIn post, M-Pesa Ethiopia said the telco-agnostic M-Pesa LeHulum platform – which was fully developed in-house – removes long-standing network barriers and “allows anyone to join the digital economy through a simple, secure, and inclusive onboarding experience.”
Users simply need to download the app, register with any phone number, and complete verification through the Fayda Digital ID eKYC system to use the service.
With M-Pesa LeHulum, users can send and receive money, pay merchants and bills, purchase airtime, make QR payments and access short-term loans. It also enables seamless transfers with banks and other wallets via integration with Ethiopia's national payment network ETHSwitch.
M-Pesa Ethiopia said the new platform “represents a significant step forward in creating a more connected financial ecosystem that works for everyone.”
Earlier this month, M-Pesa Ethiopia – which Safricom launched in 2023 – said it had 3.4 million active customers as of September 2025, up 174.8% year-on-year, and processed transactions worth ETB12.3 billion (US$206 million) between April and September 2025. It also onboarded over 30,700 active merchants during that time.
