Dynamic SIM allocation maximises network efficiency in Nigeria

One of Nigeria’s largest operators is implementing new measures to facilitate load balancing, using its network more efficiently. MTN Nigeria – the largest and most profitable operator within the MTN Group – is using Evolving Systems’ Dynamic SIM Allocation (DSA) solution to improve number utilisation through automatic number allocation and reduced network overhead costs.

Until now, MTN had used a traditional pre-provisioning approach for new SIM cards. This means it had to buy its numbers from the national regulator and pre-load them on its Home Location Registers (HLRs). The new system means that it will no longer have to buy numbers as frequently as before.

This project is also an investment in better services for MTN’s customers; the operator plans to use DSA’s on-device user interaction to offer customers more choice and personalisation when activating a new phone.

“We are confident that, moving forward, Evolving Systems’ DSA solution will be key in enabling us to drive new operational efficiencies and keep costs down as we roll out SIM cards across the country,” says Basit Arogundade, General Manager IS, Business Planning and Solutions Architecture, MTN Nigeria.

Thad Dupper, Chairman and CEO at Evolving Systems, said, “In the highly competitive wireless market, differentiation is key. By using DSA, MTN will be able to achieve significant savings both in resources and costs but most importantly it will be able to deliver strategic enhancements which will enable it to drive operational agility and ultimately competitive edge.”
