Global satellite player Intelsat announced on Wednesday it has broadened its managed-services collaboration with Solomon Telekom Company Limited (STCL) to deliver improved cellular backhaul connectivity in the Solomon Islands, particularly in remote areas.

Under the expanded arrangement, STCL is using connectivity from Intelsat’s Horizons 3e high-throughput satellite to connect dozens of cell sites tjroughout the archipelago to support expansion of the telco’s 4G service.

STCL has also appointed Intelsat to support the management of the new satellite network, providing proactive monitoring and 24/7 remote support to ensure seamless operation of the cellular backhaul solution.

“We are launching 4G mobile services to communities in the outer islands, bringing essential transformations from accessing mobile broadband, e-financial services to many other enterprise-grade applications,” said STCL CEO Christina Lasaqa in a statement.

Intelsat said the collaboration with STCL has resulted in improved voice calls and increased data usage even in remote areas, similar to the quality of service received in towns and cities.
