Russia and Azerbaijan sign satcoms deal

Satellite communications operators the Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) and Azerbaijan’s  Azercosmos have signed a cooperation agreement relating to satellite communications and broadcasting services.

The agreement was signed in Baku, Azerbaijan, during the international telecommunications and IT show BAKUTEL 2019, which took place in early December. It is aimed at facilitating collaboration between Azerbaijani and Russian operators in the creation and development of satellite communications and broadcasting networks for a variety of economic and public administration sectors in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as in Russia and Azerbaijan.

Collaborative project efforts will, the companies say, allow them to strengthen their presence in the Eurasian and African continents. In fact as RSCC deputy director general – head of business development Kseniya Drozdova noted, the partnership goes well beyond purely regional cooperation in the Caspian region.

“RSCC and Azercosmos have been successful for many years in the markets of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa,” he said, a comment underlined by offerings such as the telecommunications satellite Azerspace 1, managed by Azercosmos, which offers broadband and broadcasting solutions to customers in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Caucasus and Central Asia.

The satellite, whose service life will be 15 years, was launched in February 2013 and is equipped with 36 transponders: 24 in C-band and 12 in Ku-band at 46° east longitude. The company launched its second telecommunications satellite, Azerspace 2, at 45° east longitude in 2018.

In addition the RSCC’s Express AM series satellites cover the whole territory of Russia, the CIS, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Asia Pacific region, North and South America, and Australia.
