Ericsson said on Wednesday it has struck an agreement with Latvian telco Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) to modernize its subscriber domain infrastructure to support its planned deployment of standalone 5G.
Under the agreement, Ericsson will upgrade LMT’s backend cloud infrastructure over the next year and replace its legacy communication services and user data management systems with a modern solution built on service-based architecture.
For the cloud infrastructure upgrade, LMT will deploy Ericsson’s NFVI (Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure) solution, giving it the ability to deploy both virtualized and cloud-native network functions.
Ericsson will also upgrade LMT’s IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and consolidate its subscriber data systems within its core network to create a “future-ready architecture” capable of supporting scalable service innovations.
LMT technical director Aigars Benders said the upgrades will provide the foundation for the telco’s broader digitalization program, as well as enable it to introduce new 5G services to its subscribers.
“By transitioning to cloud infrastructure, and upgrading these essential core network functions, we gain improved operational flexibility and the ability to implement future updates with minimum disruption,” Benders said in a statement.
The deployment also marks the first deployment of Ericsson’s Unified Data Management (UDM) offering in Telia Group.
“This upgrade is not just about replacing legacy systems. It’s about empowering LMT with a 5G standalone ready cloud infrastructure and subscriber data management solution, giving it an agile and robust platform that can evolve with its customers’ needs and support new digital services as demand grows,” said Niclas Backlund, head of Ericsson’s Global Customer Unit Telia.
