India: the semiconductor deals just keep on coming

Semiconductor growth in India continues apace, with a number of deals announced in the past few days.

L&T Semiconductor Technologies, which describes itself as the first major Indian semiconductor product company, has highlighted plans to work with multinational technology company IBM in the research and development (R&D) of advanced processors.

The companies say that the scope of this work could include processor design for edge devices and hybrid cloud systems, as well as for areas such as mobility, industrial, energy, and servers.

The Economic Times news service says that under this collaboration, the partners anticipate focusing on innovation, functionality, and performance to enable reliable, secure, and scalable compute for a range of applications.

Not to be outdone, Tata Electronics, a greenfield venture of the Tata Group with expertise in manufacturing precision components, also has a lot of activity planned in the sector.

Indeed, in order to support semiconductor assembly and test facilities in Vemagal, Karnataka and Jagiroad, Assam, Tata Electronics has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with hardware and software solutions provider ASMPT Singapore to collaborate on establishing semiconductor assembly equipmentinfrastructure and solutions.

Tata Electronics and ASMPT say they will collaborate on workforce training, advancing service engineering infrastructure, automation, spare supports and boosting R&D initiatives in the area of wirebond, flip chip, advanced packaging and, integrated system packaging.

The Economic Times says this partnership will also focus on energy and material efficiency to promote sustainable growth and strengthen the semiconductor supply chain ecosystem.

But that’s not all. Tata Electronics said this week that it has also signed an MoU with semiconductor equipment and services supplier Tokyo Electron (TEL) to accelerate semiconductor equipment infrastructure for a planned semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat and the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Jagiroad, Assam, mentioned earlier.

These facilities will produce semiconductor chips for applications across automotive, mobile devices and artificial intelligence (AI) among other key areas.

Tokyo Electron will also focus on training Tata Electronics' workforce on the company's equipment and support ongoing improvement and R&D initiatives.
