As China Mobile prepares to launch Apple’s iPhone on January 17, rival China Telecom has slashed its price for the desirable smartphone.
China Telecom will offer the iPhone 5S for around 15% less than China Mobile, although the market leader has not confirmed its pricing and subsidy details. Via a price cut and various offers, China Telecom has knocked CNY800 ($132) off the price of a 16GB iPhone 5S (originally CNY5,288). In addition, the operator has lowered the device cost for customers on service plans, allowing customers on a monthly plan of CNY189 to pick up the iPhone for CNY4,888.
Jacky Yung, a China Telecom representative, stated: “It is the general practice of our company to roll out marketing promotion programmes at appropriate times to enhance the business growth.”
The iPhone has been available through China Telecom since March 2012. Number two player China Unicom has offered the iPhone since late 2009, significantly outpacing its main rivals.
