PLDT awards Huawei $29M systems upgrade contract

Huawei has won a $28.5 million contract to overhaul Filipino market leader PLDT’s online charging and electronic loading platforms for prepaid users.

PLDT recently announced that its capex would top PHP50 billion ($996 million) this year so that it could upgrade its fixed and wireless networks as well as its IT systems. The 15-month Huawei upgrade forms part of this programme.

The operator’s chairman and CEO Manuel Pangilinan said that as a result of the deal with Huawei, PLDT would become “much more agile, efficient and resilient in developing and delivering a growing array of digital services”.

PLDT’s chief corporate services officer Ray Espinosa noted that PLDT’s various brands - Smart, Sun and TNT – would have their more similar functions united under one system, as well as having business processes handled via a unified platform. This will enable them to offer their customers a greater degree of personalisation in terms of offers and rewards, as well as allowing them to bundle services more efficiently.

Wilson Zang, president of revenue management at Huawei, said that the Chinese vendor would be delivering its online charging and e-load systems as part of the transformation initiative.
