Huawei SingleRAN 22.1 sets out a Mobile AI foundation for operators

As mobile AI moves from concept to everyday reality, the demands placed on radio networks are changing quickly. AI agents, real-time multimodal applications, AI glasses and embodied intelligence all depend on a network that is not simply faster, but more responsive, balanced and adaptable.


Huawei Wireless believes this shift marks the beginning of a new “Mobile AI era”. Its latest SingleRAN 22.1 software release has been developed to help operators prepare for that transition, providing what Huawei describes as a multi-dimensional network capability foundation for the emerging Agentverse.


Unveiled in Shanghai by He Yunru, Vice President of Huawei Wireless Product Line, SingleRAN 22.1 is Huawei’s first commercial software version designed specifically for the Mobile AI era. It combines six innovation directions - GigaUplink, GigaBand, iBeam 3.0, IDEA, 0 Bit 0 Watt 0 Loss and RANSpirit - to help operators enhance capacity, experience, operational intelligence and energy efficiency through a software-led evolution.


The timing is significant. The rise of AI agents is expected to create very different traffic patterns from conventional mobile services. Rather than predominantly consuming downlink content, intelligent applications increasingly need to upload context, video and sensor information in real time. AI glasses, for example, may rely on continuous uplink video, while robots and other embodied AI services require stable uplink performance and predictable latency.


This places a fresh focus on the uplink. Huawei’s GigaUplink solution combines FDD 8T8R and Massive MIMO capabilities with intelligent multi-layer uplink reception and enhanced uplink CoMP. The goal is to suppress interference systematically and improve performance, particularly where coverage is weaker or network load is higher. Huawei reports that live-network validation has delivered more than 30% higher uplink throughput, helping establish ubiquitous 20 Mbps uplink capability for a new generation of mobile AI services.


Spectrum efficiency is another critical consideration for operators progressing towards 5G standalone. GigaBand is designed to enable 4G and 5G to share FDD spectrum more effectively, pooling spectrum and coordinating resources across time, frequency, radio access technology, space and power. This gives operators a practical route to expand 5G capability while protecting the experience of their existing LTE customer base. Huawei says the technology can deliver 1.2 times higher 5G experience without a corresponding loss in 4G experience, providing a smoother path for multi-band 5G evolution.


SingleRAN 22.1 also focuses on extracting more value from existing network infrastructure. iBeam 3.0 advances Huawei’s precision beamforming capabilities by combining channel conditions with real-time scheduling. Through more accurate beam weights, intelligent user pairing and enhanced interference suppression, it is intended to improve downlink experience in busy network conditions. In Saudi Arabia, Huawei says live-network validation showed a 15% improvement in downlink rates compared with earlier iBeam generations - demonstrating how a software upgrade can unlock additional capacity from deployed hardware.


For operators, the opportunity is not only technical. The Mobile AI era may also open a path beyond conventional traffic-based pricing. Huawei’s IDEA solution, or Intelligent Differentiated Experience Assurance, is designed to help turn network experience into a more measurable and differentiated service proposition.


IDEA uses flexible rate tiering and dynamic resource reservation to match network resources more closely to specific user and service requirements. This could allow operators to assure performance for premium customers, mobile gaming, live streaming or latency-sensitive AI services, even in congested locations. In Hong Kong, Huawei reports that HKT increased VIP live-streaming satisfaction from 92.23% to 97.69%, while a Shenzhen Metro validation recorded more than 95% target-rate satisfaction for selected uplink and downlink services in a heavy-load scenario.


Alongside performance and monetisation, energy efficiency remains central to the operator agenda. Huawei’s 0 Bit 0 Watt 0 Loss innovation uses intelligent dormancy to extend energy-saving periods while retaining rapid wake-up capabilities. The solution is designed to support deeper power savings without compromising user experience, including during daytime traffic fluctuations. Huawei says live-network results have demonstrated more than 10% additional energy savings, supporting operators’ efforts to align network growth with sustainability goals.


The sixth innovation, RANSpirit, brings the themes of intelligence and autonomy together. Combining a telecom foundation model with Huawei’s RAN Digital Twin System, RANSpirit is designed to enable intent-driven resource scheduling and closed-loop optimisation. It can help operators move from labour-intensive, reactive operations towards single-domain autonomous networks that can sense, analyse, decide and act across multiple objectives.


Importantly, SingleRAN 22.1 is already commercially available. It has reached General Availability and has been deployed by 35 operators across 23 countries. It is also the first version to support Huawei’s next-generation UBBPi series baseband boards, integrating advanced algorithms into baseband technology.

SingleRAN 22.1 offers a software-led route to make networks more capable, intelligent, efficient and commercially differentiated as the Agentverse takes shape.
