Getesa confirms 4G launch in Equatorial Guinea

Recent publicity from Equatorial Guinean operator Getesa has confirmed that it is now offering 4G/LTE smartphone services.

In May 2019, Getesa demoed 4G technology and claimed that it would be able to launch services across Equatorial Guinea’s major cities by the end of that year using fibre backhaul.

However, Getesa’s first social media post confirming its 4G launch was made on 24th December 2020. Getesa has not excused or explained the delay, although TeleGeography notes that over the past year the firm made repeated claims that its 3G network could provide faster data speeds than the 4G networks offered by its rivals.

One such rival, GreenCom (Muni), first launched an LTE offering in June 2019. However, its offering was targeted towards home modem customers rather than mobile users.
