Ericsson announced on Monday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jordanian telco Umniah to expand its 3G and 4G network in major cities across the country.

Under the MoU, Umniah will deploy Ericsson Radio System products and solutions that can be flexibly upgraded as its multi-band and multi-layer needs change over time.

As part of the expansion project, Umniah will use 5 MHz of acquired spectrum and another 5 MHz of spectrum refarmed from its 3G network to add more network capacity to its 4G network.

Umniah CEO Faisal Qamhiyah said the additional spectrum and upgraded infrastructure will enable the telco to not only handle more data traffic and serve the growing demand for mobile broadband services, but also extend 4G coverage to areas where it is currently unavailable.

“We aim to significantly improve our network capacity, expand network coverage, and deliver superior user experience for our customers,” he said in a statement.

The deal is the second struck by Umniah and Ericsson this year. In February, Umniah announced it will deploy Ericsson’s Cognitive Software AI solutions to optimise its network and address critical aspects of its network in key locations.
