The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced on Tuesday it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio to introduce a safety alert system across the country’s national highways using Jio’s 4G and 5G network.
The initiative aims to strengthen road-safety by providing timely information via SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority calls to drivers on national highways, giving them advance warning as they approach identified risk locations such as accident-prone stretches, stray-cattle zones, fog-affected areas and emergency diversions.
NHAI said the system will use Jio’s existing telecom towers with no additional roadside hardware required, which will make it easy to deploy quickly. It will also integrated in a phased manner with NHAI’s digital platforms, including its Rajmargyatra mobile app and the 1033 emergency helpline number.
While the initial service will only be available to Jio subscribers, NHAI said it plans to rope in other telcos into the project in due course.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said that by combining digital infrastructure with real-time communication tools, the initiative will help to significantly enhance commuter awareness and reduce preventable road incidents.
“I am sure that this initiative will set a new benchmark in technology-enabled road safety management,” he said in a statement.
