First 3G network in Togo under construction by leading mobile operator

Togo’s leading mobile operator is planning a major expansion and upgrade of its 2G/3G wireless network. Togo Cellulaire has commissioned Alcatel-Lucent to extend its network as a new phase of the multimillion Euro wireless broadband network transformation deal to extend the operator’s network capacity in GSM and to build the first 3G network in the country.

The new network will enable Togo Cellulaire to offer advanced mobile broadband services and to reach a greater number of subscribers and further improve their already high quality of service by taking benefit from a scalable bandwidth to accommodate the anticipated surge in mobile traffic.

Alcatel-Lucent will be the sole supplier transforming Togo Cellulaire network with its end-to-end solution that will significantly boost the operator GSM/EDGE (2.5G) network capacity and coverage and raise its 3G network to HPSA+ (3.75G) wireless capability, as well as provide new microwaves links to address the growing demand for advanced mobile high broadband services through an all-IP broadband network.

This strategic contract strengthen the long term partnership between Alcatel-Lucent and Togo Cellulaire and will enable the operator to leverage and build on its existing investments to enhance 3G HSPA+ network and to deliver new personalized innovative multimedia services to its business and consumer users in the country.

A part of the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will provide a turnkey project based on its world class expertise resources and critical professional services such as Installation and commissioning for a great part of the equipment involved in the network expansion deployment, 3G Network Design, Radio Network Planning, Field Integration, optimization and Project management as well as associated management systems enabling Togo Cellulaire to introduce new multimedia applications.

Alcatel-Lucent became Togo Cellulaire’s main supplier in 1998, providing advanced mobile solutions including radio access, core network and applications such as personalized ring back tones, mobile email and billing. Alcatel-Lucent build, extend Togo Cellulaire network capacity in GSM (2G/EDGE) as well as its 3G wireless broadband network in the country.
