Nokia supports Omnitel in HSPDA launch

Palanga in Lithuania is witnessing the launch of High Speed Data Packet Access (HSDPA) services at the hands of the Baltic's largest telecoms company, Omnitel.

From Palanga the service rollout will extend to other parts of the country. Omnitel hopes to operate its network more cost-efficiently with Nokia's HSDPA solution and to offer its customers data services at speeds of up to four times faster than current 3G speeds.

Thanks to our recently launched WCDMA 3G network that has been now upgraded to HSDPA, we can offer our customers the best quality services, such as high speed mobile Internet connection," says Antanas Zabulis, CEO, Omnitel: "WCDMA and HSDPA solutions and rapid deployment of the network have enabled us to offer this new service to our customers."

In addition to WCDMA 3G and HSDPA radio networking, Nokia has delivered packet core network equipment to Omnitel Lithuania , and will upgrade the operator's existing Nokia Mobile Switching  Center (MSCi) to Nokia MSC Server mobile softswitch. Nokia will provide maintenance services, and the network will be supported by the Nokia NetAct network and service management system. Nokia is Omnitel's sole core network and WCDMA 3G network supplier.

* Omnitel is the largest telecommunications company in the Baltics, and is a member of TeliaSonera group. It was the first to offer new technologies to Lithuania, having been the first network operator in Lithuania to launch GSM services (in 1995) and one of the first to introduce packet data transfer technology GPRS in its network. Omnitel launched UMTS trials in 2004; the country's first commercial UMTS network, again from Omnitel, was launched in February 2006.
