Nokia wins Romanian RCS & RDS 3G network contract

RCS & RDS, the Romanian fixed and greenfield mobile operator, has selected Nokia as its WCDMA 3G core and radio network supplier. The company looks forward to a quick entry into the Romanian 3G mobile market and, under the brand name Digi.Tel, to offer a wide range of services.

Romanian fixed and greenfield mobile operator RCS & RDS has selected Nokia as its WCDMA 3G core and radio network supplier. With Nokia's support the operator hopes it will be able to enter the Romanian 3G mobile market quickly and also to offer a wide range of services under its brand name Digi.Tel. RCDS & RDS has recently launched its 3G service.

For Alexandru Oprea, President of RCS & RDS: "Fast time to market and cost-efficiency are of key importance to RCS & RDS in launching 3G services in Romania."

His operations have received a vote of confidence from Filip Rommelaere, General Manager for the Balkans, Networks, Nokia: "Acquiring new customers and generating customer loyalty depends largely on how reliably services are delivered. The technical service delivery machinery, i.e., the network, must be properly designed and assured. We are confident that RCS & RDS will be able to make a strong entry to the Romanian 3G mobile market."

Nokia's supply of WCDMA 3G radio and core network to RCS & RDS includes the Nokia Flexi WCDMA Base Station, the Nokia MSC Server mobile softswitch and the Nokia Flexi Intelligent Service Node (ISN). The network will be supported by the Nokia NetAct network and service management system.Nokia will also provide RCS & RDS with network planning, implementation, project management, maintenance, third-party support, hardware repair, and training services. Deliveries have started.

In WCDMA 3G, Nokia has 67 customers to date. Almost half of the commercially launched WCDMA 3G networks have Nokia equipment.

* In December 2006 RCS & RDS won the contest for a 3G licence issued by IGCTI (Inspectoratul General pentru Comunicare si Tehnologia Informatiei). In March 2007, the company launched its 3G mobile communications service, branded as Digi.Tel.
