Hot on the heels of Shanghai, the Chinese city of Guangzhou has announced that it aims to accelerate the pace of 5G deployment by rolling out 65,000 base stations by 2021.
Guangzhou is the largest metropolitan area in China. The city’s bureau of industry and information technology has stated that it already has 5000 5G base stations running, and intends to deploy a further 14,600 before the year is out. The bureau added that 5G will enable businesses to generate over CNY800 billion by 2021.
A few days ago, the municipal government of Shanghai announced that it was aiming to have 10,000 base stations in operation by the end of the year, in order to provide 5G coverage to the city’s downtown and major suburban areas. This goal is just one step in a planned three-year CNY30 billion ($4.4 billion) investment for the country’s second most populous city.
