With an investment of CNY30 billion ($4.4 billion), the city of Shanghai – China’s second most populous – is planning to implement widespread 5G coverage by 2020.
The China Daily reports that the city’s municipal government is aiming to deploy 10,000 5G base stations to deliver 5G coverage to downtown Shanghai and the city’s major suburbs by the end of 2019.
The coverage plan is set to last three years: the same number of base stations will be deployed in 2020 to bring the city’s 36 million inhabitants full 5G coverage, with a further 10,000 base stations to be deployed in 2021.
Chinese telecom authorities issued 5G licences early last month, and the country’s Big Three were quick to set out their plans. China Mobile is aiming to deliver 5G coverage in 50 cities by the end of 2019 – including Shanghai.
