Safaricom Ethiopia announced its first-ever CEO Anwar Soussa will depart his role on July 31 after taking the helm of the unit almost two years ago.
In a Twitter post, Safaricom stated the founding CEO had overseen “significant milestones in a highly dynamic environment” in launching Safaricom Ethiopia, which became the country’s second mobile network operator and first not from Ethiopia.
Soussa joined in August 2021 and had since led the operator to gain over four million customers with a network that covers 25% of the population across 50 cities and towns.
During his tenure, Safaricom also secured a financial services licence paving the way for it to launch its popular mobile money platform M-Pesa.
Soussa held various roles in Africa, having held the role of MD of Vodacom DRC, and senior positions with Airtel at its Uganda and Chad operations, as well as MTN and Veon.
A successor will be announced at a later date, stated Safaricom Ethiopia.
