Globe Telecom has announced plans to build new subsea cables to improve connectivity for communities on the island of Mindanao.
According to The Manila Times, the operator unveiled its Submarine Cable Project, which will see the deployment of a 48-core, 175-kilometre cable network linking Zamboanga City to Isabela City, with onward connections to the municipalities of Basilan and Sulu. Globe said Isabela City will serve as a regional hub for high-capacity internet services.
Globe President and COO Carl Cruz said average monthly data consumption in the Philippines now exceeds 30GB per user, adding that the company is expanding its fibre and broadband footprint to support small businesses and grow the digital economy.
The subsea cable survey is scheduled for early 2026, with construction expected to begin in mid-2027.
Globe said its network modernisation programme has already migrated more than 600 towns across 70 provinces to full fibre broadband. The operator has invested over PHP228 billion in capital expenditure and PHP236 billion in operating expenditure to future-proof its network.
The company currently serves around 400,000 homes through its prepaid broadband plans, accounting for a total of 1.83 million broadband subscribers.
