Telefónica’s digital services arm Telefónica Tech has agreed to sell its operations in Colombia, Mexico and Chile to Spanish technology company Hiberus, as the group continues to scale back its presence in Latin America and refocus on core markets.
The sale follows a wider strategy at Telefónica to reduce capital intensity and exposure in the region, after years of pressure on returns in several Latin American markets. The operator has previously exited or reduced stakes in countries including Central America and Argentina, while prioritising investment in Spain, Brazil, Germany and the UK.
In a statement, Telefónica said the transaction includes a commercial partnership that will allow Telefónica Tech to continue serving customers in the three countries, with no impact on existing contracts.
The company added that its Digital Operations Center (DOC) in Colombia will remain part of Telefónica Tech, ensuring continuity of service and operational oversight.
Telefónica Tech COO for Spain and the Americas María Jesús Almazor said the agreement supports the group’s Transform & Grow strategic plan and reflects a shift in how the company delivers digital services in Latin America.
Hiberus CEO Sergio López said the acquisition will strengthen the company’s cybersecurity and cloud capabilities, adding that the deal brings in a specialised team to lead its expansion in the region and establishes a long-term strategic partnership with Telefónica.
The transaction marks another step in Telefónica’s effort to simplify its regional footprint while maintaining access to digital services revenue through partnerships rather than direct ownership.
