Suriname’s state-owned operator Telesur has signed a letter of intent to connect to EllaLink’s Caribbean subsea cable system, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s international connectivity.
The EllaLink Caribbean Gateway will provide Telesur with direct access to global data centres and reduce reliance on a single international route. The system will connect Suriname to Europe through EllaLink’s transatlantic network, with onward links to Brazil and the US.
EllaLink said the project will give operators, public institutions and enterprises in Suriname direct access to Tier 1 data centres, alongside a wider range of cloud and IP service providers.
Telesur said the partnership forms part of its long-term strategy to modernise infrastructure and diversify international connectivity, as existing subsea cable systems near the end of their operational life over the coming decade. The new connection is designed with a 25-year lifespan to support Suriname’s digital transformation plans through to 2030 and beyond.
The project also aligns with the European Union’s wider digital connectivity agenda to strengthen links between Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Telesur CEO Doric Ramlakhan (pictured second, from left) described the agreement as a key milestone in the operator’s infrastructure renewal strategy, adding that the project would provide the country with a more resilient and future-proof international backbone.
EllaLink COO Diego Matas (pictured first, from right) said Suriname’s early commitment highlighted demand for a new transatlantic backbone serving the Caribbean and the Guianas.
