Polish alliance takes aim at OTT

Three of Poland’s leading operators have formed a coalition with various academic institutions as well as third party developers in order to tackle competition from over-the-top (OTT) players.

Orange, Polkomtel and T-Mobile will create an “open service layer” across their core networks, allowing for the creation of services by the developer partners which the operators will then be able to monetise.

Data traffic has increased dramatically since the advent of smartphones, but the services and applications that require the network for distribution – and frequently functionality - don’t in fact provide any revenue to the network’s operator.

The use of an open service layer may overcome the typical issues of service development within core networks, allowing for faster and cheaper innovation.
