Cameroon advances toward Medusa Cable deal

Cameroon has finalised an MoU to join the Medusa Africa submarine cable and sent it to the Presidency for approval, Econfin Agency reports.

The country’s share of the project is estimated at CFA32.8 billion (US$58.6 million). Medusa an EU-backed system led by AFR-IX Telecom - will go live in 2028, linking Southern Europe with West and Central Africa. Once connected at Kribi, Cameroon will add a fifth international route alongside SAIL, WACS, SAT-3 and NCSCS.

The cable’s high capacity and multidirectional design are seen as a strategic upgrade over the ageing SAT-3 system and could help attract hyperscalers such as Google, Microsoft and Meta. Officials hope it will strengthen Cameroon’s role as a regional digital hub, though Camtel’s low utilisation of its existing cables - just 16% overall -highlights the need for a stronger commercial strategy to make full use of Medusa’s potential.
