Malaysian operators hit with SIM registration fines

Six Malaysian operators have been issued fines collectively totalling MYR700,000 ($168,500) for neglecting to authenticate new prepaid subscribers during 2019.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) issued the largest fine of MYR250,000 to U Mobile, while Celcom Axiata and Tune Talk each received penalties of MYR150,000. Smaller fines were issued to Maxis (MYR100,000), YTL Communications (MYR40,000) and Tone Plus (MYR10,000).

The regulator stated that the fines demonstrated its “firmness and commitment” to ensuring that operators comply with its frameworks, noting that new subscribers must be registered via a secure and encrypted automated platform.
