Zimbabwe regulators calls to price tariffs in US dollar

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) proposed to the government to price tariffs in US dollars and local currency, a move to fight back against hyperinflation in the country.

News Day reported, that the tariffs charged in US dollars are more affordable than when set in the Zimbabwean dollar. Mobile network operator NetOne charges US$12 for a 10GB bundle, but in the Zimbabwean dollar, subscribers would be paying the equivalent of US$33.

POTRAZ director general Gift Machengete stated: “We have engaged the Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Courier Services who also engaged the Ministry of Finance so that we get the green light to apply a pricing model where tariffs are pegged in US$ while the local currency will be pegged at the prevailing rate.

“The proposal will bring price stability and certainty to the sector. So, we are waiting for the green light.”
