Somalia deepens ties with the ITU

The Somalian Ministry of Communication and Technology signed a cooperation agreement with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to develop connectivity in Somalia.

In a translated statement, the ministry detailed the two entities will collaborate to improve ICT, digital politics, regulation of digital skills and power growth, connecting infrastructure, building confidence using digital services.

Minister of communication and technology, Jaamac Hassan Khaliif (front, left), said the partnership “strengthens” its ties with the ITU and it will “promote the modernisation and transformation of Somalia” through the building and developing of technology in Somalia.

Six Somalian operators signed a voice interconnection agreement in December 2022 in a move to deliver lower tariffs and boost usage usage. The government recently followed other African nations in banning social media app TikTok and messaging service Telegram, to stem the spread of misinformation.
