Emerging market operators will be increasingly turning to IP services and OTT in 2016, while the importance of big data analytics is becoming clear. So says Cataleya’s Jay Jayasimha…

Which developing or emerging markets (regions / countries) do you cover?

Cataleya has deployments in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. We have deployed our next-generation session border controller (SBC) in some of the largest and fastest growing markets in the world, including Nigeria, Liberia and Bangladesh.

What are your main hardware and/or services focus areas?

We develop and deploy next-generation SBCs that are specifically designed to enable new levels of intelligence in communications networks. Our technology enables operators to offer guaranteed quality of service (QoS) and experience (QoE) end-to-end using advanced data and analytics.

Operators in developing markets choose our services because we enable them to accelerate IP adoption and deliver high performance networking to customers.

What are the top market and customer trends that will drive change in your area during 2016, and why?

IP adoption in developing markets is accelerating. Operators in these markets are deploying more sophisticated IP-based apps and services and they are looking at new ways to monetise their infrastructure.

Throughout 2016, we see four trends driving change in developing markets: 

  • Increased deployments of IP-based services that demand better than ‘best effort’ IP networks
  • Greater emphasis on protecting profits and combating voice fraud. Fighting fraud is crucial for network operators trying to monetise new services
  • Voice Over WiFi is emerging as a true answer to competition from Over the Top (OTT) apps and services
  • Big Data and analytics are delivering new intelligence in the network and are enabling network operators in developing markets to deliver increasingly reliable and robust services

What are the solutions that will make the greatest impact in your area during 2016, and why?

Big Data and real-time analytics are changing what is possible for network operators in developing markets. As they roll out new and complex applications and services, their networks have to be able to deliver reliable and consistent performance. Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), Cloud-based applications, and HD voice and video all require networks that can offer guaranteed QoS and QoE end-to-end.

Big Data provides predictive analytics by collecting historical and real-time data to enable network operators to foresee future network trends and better manage them. Up until now, there has been a ‘Best Effort’ approach to IP networking but that will not support these kinds of services. They require real-time monitoring and troubleshooting to ensure that end users receive a seamless and uninterrupted experience. In 2016, we will see operators in developing markets capture more network data and use it to offer a superior service to enterprises and consumers.

What changes need to be made to speed up developments and what can hold them back?

There needs to be a realisation that Big Data and real-time analytics can have an impact on an operator’s business today. As operators in developing markets build out IP infrastructure, they should be thinking about how they build intelligence into their networks. They need to look at the level of visibility they have in their network and whether they can see more than just the transport layer. Cloud and Unified Communications require visibility from the transport to application layer to be delivered with confidence.

The migration from IP to TDM is happening and the operators that will be the most successful in IP will have thought about how they incorporate Big Data and real-time analytics into their networks.

Which technologies will be the most important in emerging markets in 2016?

Big Data and in turn intelligent networks can improve performance drastically and accelerate adoption of IP. This enables operators in developing markets to deliver new services, create new efficiencies in their network, and capture new revenue streams.

Operators in developing markets can also use this data to combat voice fraud and tackle challenges associated with Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) deployments. Intelligent networks can be used to identify behaviours consistent with fraud using machine-learning algorithms to determine the risk associated activities on the network. This enables operators to protect profitability and ensure that fraud doesn’t have a long-term impact on their operations.

In the case of VoLTE and VoWiFi, Big Data and real-time analytics will enable operators to move to an all-IP infrastructure and deploy more demanding and complex services. The underlying intelligent networks will leverage data to ensure seamless service delivery.
