Barcelona has proved itself both a worthy and a worthwhile location for the Mobile World Congress (MWC). Developing Telecoms will be keeping readers in touch with news of this year's MWC just as soon it is released. In this initial report we profile five companies all set not just to be at MWC but also ready to introduce new products and services in Barcelona.
Making two exclusive announcements at MWC from the Microsoft stand will be ALK Technologies, who developed CoPilot Live, the satellite navigation software that runs on some of the latest GPS-enabled smartphones and Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs). CoPilot enables GPS navigation, bringing door-to-door guidance to many portable devices, platforms and operating systems. This form of mobile navigation offers detailed voice directions, the latest 3D graphics technology and real-time live services aimed at making a journey better.
Unveiling an interactive stand at this year's event is a company familiar to Developing Telecoms readers, Andrew, the division of CommScope which specialises in radio frequency subsystem solutions for wireless networks. Andrew effectively supports the entire Radio Frequency (RF) footprint with transmission line systems, antennas, base station subsystems, in-building distributed wireless systems, and network solution products and services.
BuzzCity is a developer of global wireless communities and consumer services. Established in 1999 in Singapore, it now operates what it claims to be the world's largest wireless community - or mobile social network - namely, mygamma.com for two distinct audiences: the newly connected emerging middle class in developing markets and the blue collar sector in developed regions. These "unwired" consumers are accessing the mobile Internet on their phones due to widespread and affordable wireless access. BuzzCity plans to make two news announcements at MWC.
Omnix Software will be announcing a new product at MWC. Omnix provides project automation software solutions for telecom infrastructure management. It enables operators to comply with regulatory legislation and reduce CAPEX and OPEX costs associated with running a network using bespoke software solutions.
Omnix specialises in assisting operators to deliver complex network projects and manage network assets to deliver a more efficient telecoms network.
Shazam will be making exclusive announcements at WMC, having had a very busy 2008 with the launch of its successful services for both the iPhone and the Android platform. The iPhone application has been dowloaded by over three million people, while more than 50 million music tracks have been tagged by iPhone users. The Shazam application is believed to be the second most popular application on the Apple App Store and it has been featured in a recent Apple advert. Shazam has now launched an enhanced version supporting the 2nd generation iPod touch, and additional features to deliver an even greater mobile music experience.
