Zee signs Airtel agreement after Jio wipeout

Indian market leader Bharti Airtel has signed a three-year agreement with media firm Zee Entertainment Enterprises.

The agreement, described as “multi-layered” by the Economic Times, comes hot on the heels of rival operator Reliance Jio wiping Zee’s content from its network on 8th August. However, the events are reportedly not related, as Zee began discussions with Airtel some time ago.

Under the terms of the deal, Airtel will provide customer data to Zee, offering insight into their preferences and behaviour in terms of how they use content. Zee delivers digital streaming content via its Zee5 platform in 12 Indian languages, including Bengali, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

The ET noted that Zee’s dispute with Jio was over content pricing, but noted that the firm said it remained open to providing content via Jio’s network “provided we get a fair value”, adding that it would “ask for consumer insights” prior to any agreement.
