Zimbabwe’s Econet InfraCo announces industrial park plans

Econet InfraCo, the infrastructure arm of telecommunications provider Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has announced plans to develop a 300-hectare industrial park not far from the country’s main airport.

It will be sited near Robert Mugabe International Airport in the capital Harare, and will include a 100MW solar power plant as well as a large data centre, although precise details of the capacity of the data centre do not yet appear to be available.

Local newspaper reports say that the project is intended to create a modern industrial and logistics hub that leverages proximity to the airport for manufacturing, processing and export-oriented businesses.

The development will be rolled out in phases, in line with demand. Work on the first phase of the overall project, which could be one of the largest private-sector developments since Zimbabwe’s independence, has apparently already begun.

The industrial park is said to be one of several major initiatives that have received approval from Econet Group founder Strive Masiyiwa.

Econet Group chief executive Douglas Mboweni, quoted by a number of news resources, explains: “Our vision is to create the infrastructure such as power and water facilities needed for a modern industrial park. This will make it easier for investors to come in, take advantage of the location, and create jobs.”

The Econet InfraCo name was publicly unveiled recently as part of a broader corporate restructuring. However, the company says it is not a new business but has long operated as a dedicated unit within Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, providing and managing core infrastructure assets, including towers, fibre, power systems and data facilities.
