Globe Telecom upgrades customers to fibre broadband for free

Globe Telecom transfers customers to fibre broadband for free

Philippines operator Globe Telecom made good on a pledge to upgrade its broadband network, stating 40% of targeted customers have been migrated to higher speed networks for free.

In a statement, the operator said by shifting customers to fibre broadband services, they can now enjoy higher speeds, transfer larger data files and see a more stable connection, as more people rely on the internet for work, education and entertainment.

Darius Delgado, Globe Telecom VP and head of broadband business said: “A good, stable, and reliable internet connection is a critical need under the new normal. To meet our customers' demands, we upgraded our network with superior technology for a better internet experience.

“We are rolling out fibre to homes nationwide, and upgrading our customers to fibre connections for free to give them first-world internet connectivity that they deserve”.

In September, the company announced it will invest PHP50.3 billion ($1.03 million) into infrastructure upgrades, answering government calls to action for urgent upgrades to support the Philippines during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A fibre connection provides customers in the Philippines with a max download speed of 1Gbps, in comparison, a copper-based service yields speeds up to 15Mbps, stated Globe Telecom.

The company noted its investments are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UNSDG number 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.

Globe Telecom reported in its H1 2020 results, it had 2.9 million broadband subscribers a 58% year-on-year increase.
