Telecom Fiji says it has signed a partnership deal with New Zealand-based critical communication solutions firm Kordia to install a new transmission network for the northern island of Vanua Levu.
Under the deal announced on Tuesday, Kordia and Telecom Fiji will implement a network connecting the Savusavu Submarine Cable Station on Vanua Levu’s south coast to the Labasa Exchange on the north coast. Kordia said it will use transmission equipment from Ciena to build the route.
Telecom Fiji CEO Charles Goundar described the project as a critical step in expanding the telco’s network’s capacity and reliability for Vanua Levu.
“The new transmission network will support the growing demand for high-speed connectivity and digital services across Fiji, enabling us to deliver even more robust and scalable solutions for our customers,” he said in a statement.
Kordia has worked with Telecom Fiji before, having provided consultancy and fibre testing services for the telco’s optical fibre network. Kordia’s other work in the Pacific Islands region include installing Ciena gear at InterChange Vanuatu’s subsea fibre landing stations, and providing network testing and fibre training for Tonga Telecom.
Vanua Levu is the second largest island in Fiji with an estimated 135,000 residents.
