Dominican Republic gets new broadband choices from start-up

Start-up firm CHT Holdings Dominicana is planning to use infrastructure from Dominican electricity firm ETED (Empresa de Transmision Electrica Dominicana) to increase the country’s options for broadband connectivity.

The newcomer has also procured the permanent right to use capacity on an international submarine cable with a landing point at Punta Cana.

In July 2017, the firm indicated that it would acquire a majority holding in a local cable firm, Servicios de Parabolica, Ingenieria Electronica y Communicaciones. However, this deal appears to have been quietly shelved.

CHT Holdings CTO Josemiguel Davila said: “By enabling CHT Holdings as a nationwide operator, we are taking a firm step towards fulfilling our mission: connecting the majority of Dominicans to the world, through the best technology and services, contributing to improve equal access to quality education in the country.”
