A leading Filipino operator has is set to transition its international interconnects from circuit-switched to IP connections. Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) has extended its deployment of Acme Packet session border controllers (SBCs) in order to add more network capacity for its growing international wholesale services. In addition to interconnect solutions, PLDT is using Acme Packet SBCs for both residential and enterprise Voice over IP (VoIP) services.
The Philippines has a significant amount of international traffic due to both a high overseas population as well as a strong Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry. As the incumbent, PLDT carries much of the country’s international voice traffic , and so selected Acme Packet’s solution due to its need to meet increasing demands for SIP-based interconnect from international operators.
The solution’s support for a wide range of codecs and transcoding allows the operator to address an expanded market opportunity by offering premium interconnect services.
“IP-based networks continue to expand and as the preferred full service provider of voice, video and data, we require the best solutions that will enable us to reach nearly all possible network borders,” said Genarco C. Sanchez, vice president of network planning and engineering, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company. “With these solutions, we continue to deploy multiple applications and services on various borders cost effectively and quickly.”
