The agreement has a fifteen-year lifespan, and the firms can choose to extend it. The immediate goals are the “short term acceleration of the modernisation of the entire RAN network to the most modern technology, compatible and supporting the latest standards”, according to a statement from the two firms.
Both firms will remain as market players in both wholesale and retail, and neither is conceding any ownership of their networks or spectrum, with the sharing of RAN infrastructure “limited to technical aspects”.
The infrastructure sharing arrangement will allow the firms to increase their coverage by dispersing their existing base stations that are currently covering the same area. The agreement will allow each operator to access 10,000 base stations, around 3000 more than each currently has access to.
