Thai broadband leader upgrades - Redback the lucky bidder

Redback Networks Inc, a provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, has announced that its SmartEdge multi-service edge routers have been selected by True Corporation.

True Corporation Public Company Limited (the former Telecom Asia) is Thailand 's largest broadband operator. It will use the new Redback equipment as the platform for its next generation broadband IP network infrastructure.

Faced with increasing demand for high-speed broadband internet connectivity and services, True Corporation needed to evolve its existing Internet infrastructure to address the growing broadband IP demands of both its residential and business customers. In addition to accommodating large scale increases in subscriber numbers, True Corporation also revealed aggressive plans to extend its product range and provide triple-play services (data, voice and video) in the future.

" Thailand is one of the fastest growing broadband markets in the world," said Haroon Butt, a senior analyst at Point Topic, a broadband market research company. "Today, Thailand has deployed more than 400,000 high-speed Internet lines, and is expected to double that number in the next 12 months."

 "When planning our next-generation broadband network, it was important that the chosen system would not only efficiently scale to meet the increases in our subscriber base, but also be powerful enough to provide a foundation for a range of value-added, subscriber-centric services going forward," said Dr Viriya Upatising, CTO of True Internet Co.

 The SmartEdge platform delivers the Redback's advanced subscriber management capabilities with the SmartEdge platform's purpose-built hardware and software. The result is claimed to be as follows:

  •  subscriber management with dynamic policy enforcement;
  • carrier-class IP routing;
  • ATM and Metro Ethernet aggregation;
  • MPLS VPNs;
  • advanced video capabilities, including multicast; and
  • hierarchical and high performance Quality of Service (QoS).

Redback Networks' NetOp Policy Manager, a policy management solution working in unison with the SmartEdge multi-service edge router and other Redback products, is a portal that allows service providers to define, design and deploy new value-added, revenue generating services. Redback is working through one of its reseller partners to implement the solution at True Corporation.

Customers for Redback's SmartEdge include China Telecom, China Netcom, Chunghwa Telecom, and Turk Telecom.
