Cambodia's high 4G availability a trade-off for slow speeds

Focusing on 4G availability has rocketed Cambodia into the top half of Opensignal’s global rankings for this metric – but at the cost of 4G speeds.
The country’s three main operators – which have a collective share of 96% of subscribers - have prioritised spreading 4G coverage to the extent that Cambodia now stands level with a number of more developed countries in which 4G has been available for much longer.
The market leader Metfone placed second in terms of availability, with a respectable 77.9%. It was beaten by Smart Axiata, which offered 81.3% 4G coverage, while Cellcard was not far behind with 74.5%.
However, the operators have sacrificed speed in pursuit of availability, with Cambodia ranking in Opensignal’s bottom 10 countries in terms of download speeds. Smart Axiata led the way with 7.9Mb/s and Cellcard was close behind with 7.1Mb/s – but Metfone’s 2.8Mb/s was described by the analytics firm as more representative of speeds on 3G networks.
Opensignal’s findings were based on over 152 million measurements collected over the quarter between the start of April to the end of June.
