Philippines-based operator Globe Telecom reportedly announced plans to upgrade 3G infrastructure to 5G-ready 4G systems in several locations on the islands of Visayas and Mindanao, continuing its mass connectivity upgrade programme.
Local media reported the operator was fast-tracking plans to shift the company’s focus on 4G this year, through developing its infrastructure in: Bacolod City, Cebu City, Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City in the Visayas, as well as Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao, reported Rappler.
The news follows the operator ditching the sale of 3G SIM cards across all retail and distribution chains.
The operator also currently deploying its 5G network, having rolled out commercial services to 17 key cities in Metro Manila, targeting 80% coverage in the country’s capital region.
