Aptilo Networks: Johan Terve's 2014 Trends

South America is experiencing strong growth in the telecoms space, making it the top priority for investment in emerging markets, for 2014.

One example is Brazil investing heavily in wireless infrastructure. The Olympic Games are fast approaching, and the World Cup 2014 will be here very shortly. Think of it, most if not all of these visitors will bring a smartphone, or laptop, or other wireless device (or two or three), snapping photos, emailing and surfing the web, using tremendous amounts of mobile data. Brazil’s mobile operators have been proactively investing in Wi-Fi infrastructure to handle the massive surge of users that will be temporarily joining the network for these events and to enable Wi-Fi offloading for the millions of subscribers.

Wi-Fi technology is generally also very hot in emerging markets in its own right. Wi-Fi has become a way to build out affordable bandwidth for the millions of existing users. Many of Aptilo’s customers in emerging markets, for instance TIM Brasil, charge equally for Wi-Fi and 3G/4G. It’s the HetNet trend.

We feel that after South America, Africa will be the next region to see big growth. Investment has already started, with Google partnering with companies such as our customer Wananchi Group in Nairobi, to build low-cost, fast Wi-Fi Internet access.
