Transmode: Ola Elmeland's 2014 Trends

In some African nations, three times as many people have access to a mobile phone than to clean water. A shocking statistic but it shows how important mobile communications are.

Fulfilling this mobile demand means access to the internet which is crucial for all emerging markets. While globally more people are able to connect to the internet, the least developed countries often remain unconnected. While access to the internet is key - it is high-speed internet access that is critical for social and economic development and this should be the main concern of telecoms providers investing in developing countries. The increasing bandwidth demand from mobiles is putting a strain on many networks and the need to increase capacity has to be met.

In order to expand connectivity in mobile networks across all emerging markets, base stations will be connected to a fibre-optic network. Mobile-backhaul solutions will have to be flexible and scalable to meet the demands of bandwidth hungry smart phones and tablets.

While high-speed broadband internet is not new it will continue to revolutionise the economies of nations where it is deployed. Optical fibre and WDM-technology will bring the capacity needed for high-speed internet – particularly in densely populated areas.
